Compare Elovate translation options: DeepL covers 36+ languages, GPT offers wider global support

Updated this week

Understanding which languages are supported by your translation provider is essential, especially when choosing between DeepL and GPT for your Elovate workflows.

Here’s how they compare.

DeepL supported languages

As of mid-2025, DeepL supports 36+ languages in its Translator and API platforms.

Source and target languages include:

  • European languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish

  • Western languages: English (EN-GB, EN-US), Spanish (ES / ES-419), French, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (PT-BR, PT-PT)

  • Other languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Thai (limited access)

Notes:

  • Hebrew, Vietnamese, and Thai are currently limited to DeepL Pro and next-generation API models, with restrictions on file translation and glossaries.

  • For Classic vs. Next-Gen models, features like formatting and formality options may vary by language pair.

Language gaps:

  • DeepL does not support some EU languages like Croatian (HR), Irish, and Luxembourgish.

GPT (OpenAI) language support

GPT models, available via Elovate’s AI integration, support a much wider range of languages:

  • Croatian (HR) and other DeepL-unsupported languages are fully supported.

  • GPT supports virtually all languages, including low-resource and regional dialects (e.g., African and Asian languages).

Notes:

  • While GPT’s coverage is extremely broad, translation quality may vary for low-resource languages.

  • For high-resource languages, performance is generally strong and competitive with DeepL.

How this affects Elovate users

  • If your translation needs include Croatian or any language not supported by DeepL, use GPT integration in Elovate.

  • For higher consistency, glossary management, and formality control in widely used business languages, DeepL remains the stronger option.

  • Leverage the best-fit provider based on your language coverage and quality needs.
